Burke gets state wide recognition

Published Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Bainbridge High School Lady Cats forward Alexis Burke continues to garner statewide attention while helping her team to one of the best seasons in school history.

Going into Tuesday night’s final home game with Region 1AAAA foe Americus-Sumter County at the Bainbridge High School Gymnasium, coach Latreisha Moon’s Lady Cats were 3-0 in Region 1AAAA play and 19-2 overall.

Burke has been averaging between 20 and 30 points game after game.

Burke, who signed with the University of Illinois prior to the season, is rated the state’s top prospect by peachstatehoops.com. ESPN rates her the No. 11 small forward nationally.

Of the four top prospects in the state, the 5-foot-11 Burke is the only one from outside the metro-Atlanta area.

The others are Khaalidah Miller of Douglas High School of Atlanta, who is rated the No. 2 player in the state by Blue Chip Basketball, Kayla Lewis of Southwest DeKalb High School who is ranked No. 3 in the state by ESPN, and Nia Evans of Redan High School, who is rated the No. 4 player in Georgia by ESPN.

Burke will lead the Lady Cats into action against three more regular season opponents and into the Region 1AAAA Tournament at a yet-to-be-determined site.

This Friday, Feb. 5, they will take on the Thomas County Central High School Lady Yellow Jackets in a Region 1AAAA game at 6 p.m. in Thomas County.

On Saturday, Feb. 6, they will take on the Baker County High School Lady Bears at 6 p.m. in Newton and on Tuesday, Feb. 9, they will play the Lee County High School Lady Trojans in a Region 1AAAA game at 6 p.m. in Leesburg.
